Helen Horlacher Evans graduated from Officer Candidate School for the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, serving in Central Europe. In 1946, Helen began her career as a Sr. Training Officer for the G.I. Bill of Rights with the KY Regional VA and later coordinated “Friends of KET,” the statewide support group for KY Education Television. She worked at both the Lt. Governor’s and Governor’s Mansions on special projects for the First Lady, and reopened and directed until 2005 the historic Vest-Lindsey House in Frankfort. Helen sat on the board of the National Society of DAR, co-chairing the Veteran’s Oral History Project, WWII Memorial, Women in Military Service Memorial, WWII Museum, Kentucky’s Elective Service Board, Kentucky’s WWII Centennial Commemorative Commission and the KY Society of DAR. She was a charter member for the WWII Museum in New Orleans, the WWII Memorial in Washington, and the Women in Military Service Memorial in Arlington. Also active in many community organizations, she received multiple service awards in her lifetime.
