Mr. Thurston served in the United States Navy from 28 January 1966 to 10 December 1968. He served “in country” in Vietnam from January 1968 to December 1968.

Thurston is a member of the Military Freedom Fest Honor Guard and an Honor Flight volunteer. A past president of Bluegrass Crime Stoppers, he has spent many hours as a Lexington Chrysalis House volunteer, helping young women cope with substance abuse and other issues. Within Lexington, Thurston proudly serves on the Fraternal Order of Police Board and has helped establish the Police Officer Memorial and the Police Athletic League.
