Cpl. Julia Cantrell-Martin entered the Air Force in 1952, and was assigned as a Technical Librarian to test pilots at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, keeping track of records in areas of equipment and maintenance, radar and radio communications, and clerical and mechanical operations. She was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal as a result of her activity in the community around the base. As a young 85, Julia continued to serve with Big Sisters mentoring young girls. She worked with Operation Read and Read to Succeed, assisting adults and youth in the East End of Lexington. Cantrell-Martin was an advocate for KY nursing home residents as a Nursing Home Ombudsman; and volunteered for the Story Time Bus, reading stories to preschool children at the World Equestrian Games.
