LCDR Paschal Baute
Branches of Service: Army and Navy
Military Occupation: Chaplain
Years of Service: 1948-1950; 1961-1970
LCDR Paschal Baute enlisted in the Army in 1948. After leaving the Army in 1950, he rose to the rank of Cadet Col. in the Air Force ROTC at Notre Dame. In 1961, he joined the US Naval Reserve, graduating from Chaplain’s School. LCDR Baute requested a transfer to the USNR Medical Services Corps, and left the Navy in 1970. Dr. Baute’s service to his communities is voluminous, a testament to his love of God and an insatiable passion to help others, even after being diagnosed as “catastrophically disabled” (legally blind). After being ordained as a Catholic Priest in 1959, Paschal served as a teacher at Midway College and UK, led workshops for Ohio psychologists, developed storytelling as a bridge builder for various audiences (using drums and harmonicas), administered a program for 18 years using volunteers in a correctional setting, led many interfaith activities such as a wedding ministry, and mentored corporate leaders, sales personnel, police and firefighters. He helped develop one of the first national computer-scored personality tests, directed treatment programs for alcoholism and family issues, and helped develop the first HMO in Lexington.
